THE Alan Courtenay Cup Competition, played in memory of the 1989 Worcestershire GC captain who sadly died at an early age, was well supported by members.
The competition is a 36 hole Stableford Competition for pairs.
In the morning round several pairs scored well and five pairs scored 40 points; four points better than par.
Alan Watts and Carl Bayliss were in good form and returned with 40 points, the same score as Martin Lloyd partnered by Alan Davies. The experienced pair of Wes Curtis and Peter Lupino also returned a score of 40 points as did Neil Devery playing with Andy Dunster. In the afternoon competition Dave Farrell and Dave Harding scored an incredible 42 points, the same score as Mark Davies and Colin Jones. None could match the consistent scoring of Martin Davies and Alan Lloyd. Martin and Alan returned identical scores in both rounds and with a total of 80 points they took first place. Mark Davies and Colin Jones returned the same score as Peter Lupino and Wes Curtis, a total of 79 points. But Mark and Colin were placed second on the usual count back system, Peter and Wes were placed third.
In Division Two of the Mid Week Medal Competition, David Colliver returned a score of three strokes below par to take first place. Jim Wilde was placed second with a 71 and Paul Butler third with a 74. In Division One Brian Heap topped the group with a three below par score of 68. A score of 71 was good enough for former club captain, Terry Price, to be placed second whilst Ian Belsham edged former club captain Brian Coleman out of third place with a score of 72.
In the Ladies' Closed Meeting, Diane Meakin was again in scintillating form and returned a net score of 66, five shots better than par, to take first place. Cath Francis, who returned with a gross 84, had the best gross score of the day. Former lady captain Jill Exell, won the Hollins Putting Cup.
In Division One Liz Lewis was placed third, Veronica Shaw second and the winner was Jenny Simms. Division Two was won by Kate Cross, with Linda Mackie second and Sandra Schofield third. Competition in Division Three was keen. Former lady captain Jean Coleman maintained her improving form to take third place. Pat Rose was second and Faith Tubbs first.
In the NSPCC Ladies Golf Classic Qualifying Competition, Cath Francis, playing with club director Janet Clowrey, won the day returning with 38 points. Liz Lewis and former Warwick County player Ursula Pearson were runners up with 37 points.
The Worcestershire players are this season winning prizes away from home. In the Ladies' Invitation at Blackwell Golf Club, local player Mary Horobin partnered by the Blackwell Dinah Spillane won the first prize, a set of vanity cases, with 36 points.
In the Ludlow mixed open team competition, two players of The Worcestershire, Pat Catlin and Terry O'Donnell, playing with Chris Catterill and Edna Spencer of Ludlow, easily won the competition with the excellent score of 88 points.
