ONE of the area's most successful jazz bands is celebrating its eighth anniversary.

Abbey Jazz will hold a special seven-man session, larger than the usual six, in Malvern to mark the occasion.

Abbey Jazz was formed by Len and his son, Neil - although Neil has had to take a back seat following the arrival of his two children - and has played fortnightly events ever since.

Now Len calls upon enthusiastic jazzmen from across the West Midlands and Gloucestershire to keep the music playing.

"Basically all the musicians I come in contact with I try and get involved in the band," said Len. "We've got about 20 or 30 we call upon and I think that's the secret to our success. It's almost like a different band every gig because we get a different combination to play."

Abbey Jazz's anniversary session will be at Malvern Rugby Club on Sunday, June 8, from 8pm to 11pm. Admission costs £3.

Prior to the anniversary date, Len will be joined by trumpeter John Burnett, clarinettist Norman Field and guitarist Brian Mellor for another session of Abbey Jazz at the Three Horseshoes, Poolbrook at 8.30pm on Monday. Admission to the gig is free.
