THIS Herefordshire Sunday League match was a low scoring but extremely competitive fixture with Brockhampton winning by one wicket.
COLWALL v BROCKHAMPTON
Asked to bat first on a firm but slightly damp Ghost Meadow wicket, Colwall were soon in trouble when opener James Wagstaff edged his second ball to the wicket keeper.
Lee Hankins and Majid both looked in good form but failed to capitalise on a start, and when Tim Riley was beaten for a stubborn 23 it was once again left to the tail to make a siginificant contribution. However only Damien Berry looked in form and he holed out at deep mid wicket for 15 to leave Colwall to defend a meagre 115.
Bowling from the Pavilion end, Andy Sutton struck two early blows. First Watkins was caught at cover by Majid and then Price was deceived by a full length ball which he edged low and fast to the keeper. At the other end Majid had Owens caught behind and it seemed that only the Brockhamp-ton captain, Stuart Jennings stood between Colwall and victory.
Matt Berry and Mike King bowled tidy spells but were unable to make a break through, and for a while the spin of Wagstaff was resisted.
A short burst from Damien Berry, bowling despite a stiff back, was needed to finally dispose of the awkward Green and at 70-4 Colwall were back in the game.
Wagstaff looked deadly to all the new batsmen and wickets began to tumble at both ends with only Jennings looking at all comfortable.
Mike King's quick throw to the keeper after backing up at the bowler's end won the ninth wicket, and Brockhampton needed 12 to win with one wicket left.
A lapse or two in the close field saw three singles too easily obtained and Brockhampton closed in on the target.
Returning to complete his overs Sutton bowled to Jennings. His second ball was short, was slashed and hit the outside edge, the ball looped agonisingly close to King at third man but eluded his outstretched finger tips and rolled over the line for a cruel boundary.
Two balls later it was all over with Jennings unbeaten on 59.
