ANOTHER failed attempt to start the season saw this match abandoned after 20 overs following a heavy shower that had rivers running down the Newland square.
BARNARDS GREEN SINGLES v BRINTONS
The Green skipper lost the toss and was asked to bat on a soft strip. With the conditions ideal for bowling, the Brintons openers had Freeman and Genever very watchful as the ball swung prodigiously and, with plenty of seam movement, laying bat to ball was not seen very often. With the first runs not coming until the seventh, over when Freeman edged one through the slips, Genever struggled to find and fluency and edged to the keeper. Freeman kept the slip cordon on their toes with more streaky runs to third man. Waldron (1-14 off 8 overs) was finally rewarded when Freeman (15) saw his flashing drive brilliantly caught at second slip. Beavon came and went as Bryant took two wickets for 20 but Darren Tolley and Dave White stated to gain the upper hand as the bowlers tired. White (8no) hit two screaming cover drives whilst Tolley (19no) played shots all over the field.
The shower arrived and stayed for 20 minutes leaving the ground covered in water. Both captains agreed after an early tea that there was no prospect of further play.
The Barnards Green Singles have still yet to play a full match during the 2003 season.
