A CITY charity is hoping to set a new world record for the biggest group head-shave to take place in one day.

Leukaemia Care, a national charity based on Worcester's Shrubbery Avenue, is trying to encourage as many people as possible to have their head shaved or coloured.

Inspired by similar events in Australiait is thought that this will be the first ever head-shave in this country.

Shaving centres will be set up around the country including Covent Garden, London, and a location in Worcester, which is to be confirmed.

As well as individuals going bald for charity, Ollie Mackie, who is in charge of the charity's events, sponsorship and fund-raising, hopes companies will also become involved.

"The head-shave is an opportunity to show empathy to those patients who lose their hair as a side-effect of chemotherapy," said Mr Mackie.

"We have no idea what the record is but we will be finding out."

The date for the Great Head Shave has been set for Saturday, September 6.

This is one of a series of fund-raising activities coming up for the charity which provides care and support for patients, their families and carers during their diagnosis and treatment for leukaemia or an allied blood disorder.

On Sunday, June 15, the charity has 40 runners registered to take part in the Edinburgh Marathon.

This will be followed by the British 10k Road Race in London on Sunday, July 13 and the Great North Run in Newcastle on Sunday, September 21.

Anyone interested in helping raise funds for the charity should contact Mr Mackie on 0870 7743667.

A helpline for the Great Head Shave has also been set up on 0870 7743667 and applications can be emailed headshave@leukaemiacare.org.uk
