STHERE'S a glimmer of hope for Droitwich Spa folks struggling to get their foot on the property ladder.

A multi-million pounds cash injection for new housing developments in the town has been announced by Spa Housing Association.

Around £3.5 million must be split between Droitwich and neighbouring city Worcester for allocation in 2003/2004.

The Queen Street organisation, which is part of Festival Housing Group, intends to pump the cash into two key developments on the Westlands estate, although the exact locations are yet to be confirmed.

Festival's commercial director, Richard Grounds, said both rented and low cost ownership schemes are in the pipeline. "It's good news for Spa and good news for local people in housing need," he added.

Government run - The Housing Corporation - has stumped up half the windfall. Further private finance adds to the cash pot.

The shortage of affordable housing in Droitwich has featured in your No1 newspaper frequently this year.

Spa housing has previously admitted that it struggles to meet demand because of the shortage of suitable, affordable land for development in the area.

Bosses are currently seeking planning permission for several new developments across the town. The schemes aim to create room for homes by demolishing disused garages.

Wychavon district councillor Roy Seabourne (Lab - West) has become a key contact for the homeless and people seeking social housing.

He said: "Any extension of affordable housing in Droitwich Spa is good news."
