THERE'S plenty to make you smile in the way of music around the district this week in the shape of original and tribute material, the very best of swing and top classical performances.

Former Cockney Rebel Steve Harley is staging an electro-acoustic evening on Saturday at Worcester's Huntingdon Hall. A fund-raising friend of the venue, Steve is promising a medley of hits from his 11 albums as well as a few unreleased treats.

He follows a performance from top folk singer John Kirkpatrick, who has been a leading innovator of folk in Britain since the 1960s. He has played with the likes of the Albion Band, Steeleye Span, the Richard Thompson Band, Brass Monkey and Band of Hope among others and is noted for his 'essentially English' sound.

Young musician Paul Scourfield will be joining him on stage as part of Huntingdon Hall's own mentoring scheme to support up-and-coming folk talents. They play tomorrow and are leading a music workshop on Saturday for people 16 and over with some playing experience. In a different mood, the sounds of the 20s and 30s are carefully recreated with instrument and costume as well as music when the famous Pasadena Roof Orchestra swings in to Tewkesbury.

Audiences will be treated to music by Ellington, Gershwin, Porter and Berlin with all the elegance and style of the day. Enjoy seeing one of the best bands in the business at work on Sunday at The Roses Theatre. Call the box office on 01684 295074.

Jazz fans will also enjoy Angela Elliott, who is performing with The Rod Kelly Trio in the Warners Bar at The Roses on Tuesday. She promises a mix of evergreen jazz classics and some lesser known gems in her set which begins at 8.15pm. Tickets are £5.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Karen Carpenter and more than 30 years since The Carpenters had their first number one with Close To You. A chance to relive those 70s days with the popular singer is coming in the form of The Carpenters UK tour which is coming to the Palace Theatre in Redditch on Sunday (June 8). It starts at 8pm. For tickets and details, call 01527 65203 or visit www.redditchbc.gov.uk.

It will be time to pull on some tight white trousers, stick on a beard and join in the fun when tribute is paid locally to one of our greatest bands of all time. Bee Gees Gold is coming to The Roses in Tewkesbury on Saturday. Martin Spooner, Lee Stewart and Peter Dedman will be Robin, Barry and Maurice Gibb for the evening, playing all the hits. Call the box office on 01684 295074.

For classical fans, 'Summer Nights' will mean the latest Orchestra of the Swan concert instead of an excuse to wear shiny 70s disco gear. The Civic Hall in Stratford will be ringing with the rather more sedate sounds of Barber, Charles Fitts, Vaughan Williams, Delius and Butterworth. It takes place on Monday at 6.30pm and costs £7-£10. Call the box office on 01789 414513.

There will also be a treat on Sunday when The King's Trio comes to the Huntingdon Hall in Worcester. The trio comprises successful entrants in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, all of whom are former members of King's College, Cambridge. The concert is raising money for an ovarian cancer research charity in memory of Alison Scaiff, a librarian at King's School, Worcester, and a local pianist and organist. Tickets are £10, call the box office on 01905 611427 or visit www.huntingdonhall.com.
