WELLS Road has reopened to traffic following the early completion of repairs to a retaining wall.
Poolbrook-based contractors M Walsh and Sons finished work on the stone wall, between Wells Road and Hanley Terrace in 13 weeks, three weeks ahead of schedule.
On Saturday, the lights that have controlled traffic along the road for several months were taken down. Damage to the wall was first noticed late in 2001 and test boreholes were drilled in March 2002 to find out what conditions were like underground.
However, work could not begin until this year putting in hundreds of concrete piles reaching down 2.5 metres into the bedrock. The cost of repairing the 30 metres of wall was about £250,000.
