I AM concerned on the viability and operation of the digital CCTV cameras in Malvern.
I live within 100 metres of a surveillance camera. Despite this, week by week my fears rise in the early hours of the morning due to some disturbance or other. Some of the incidents last for a period of time during which one would expect some police response.
It begs the question - is the system manned 24 hours?
Hearsay from an informed source say the cameras offer low resolution images which would not lead to a successful prosecution. My own digital camera at the same distance is very clear and precise. The system in use seems to have been set up as a covert operation only.
In Paignton, Devon their system is overt in its operation. They have notices advertising CCTV cameras in operation with a message to law-abiding citizens and visitors. This approach also gives a clear warning to wrong doers.
An access telephone number and contact point should also be displayed within the framework of the Data Protection Act. Our system has not a single label.
Does anyone have faith in the system?
