BARNARDS Green Singles completed their first match of the season and emerged victorious by 53 runs in a very high scoring encounter away at Teme Valley.
Skipper Steve Freeman was delighted when his opposite number asked the Green to make first use of what appeared to be an excellent batting strip. Freeman (28) and Genever (20) got Green off to a good start but first change bowler Burgoyne dismissed them and Beavon (28) and the Green were rocking at 79-3. There now followed a stand of 185 between Dave White and Andy Wheeler. Their 18 over onslaught was brought to an end when White fell to catch in the deep for 82. Confusion on how many runs Wheeler needed for a century denied the batsman a deserved ton. Spencer, believing he only needed one more run, took a quick single but then could not relinquish the strike leaving Andy Wheeler stranded on 97no. Barnards Green posted 296-4.
With such a mammoth total on the board the Green attacked from the start. Even though the board was ticking over the wickets fell as well. Mezzone and Brown added 92 rapid runs but Churchill (3-79) and Spencer (2-14) mopped up. Brown's earlier spell of 3-39 had put the skids under Teme Valley as they were 243 all out and the Green victorious by 53 runs.
BARNARDS Green Thirds lost at home to Worcester in a match played at the delightful Newland ground.
Worcester made 224-5 and looked set for an early finish when Green crumbled to 139-9, despite a fine 27 from Jonathon Lewis and 23 from Roy Mayo. Number 11 batsman Emily Price and 16-year-old Rob Tyler (9no) had other ideas and took the game into the last over with a fine stand of 37 before Emily was bowled for 21.
