FORMER SAS soldiers are divulging some of their secrets to Worcestershire travellers planning round-the-world excursions.

Objective, a company made up of safety experts including two former members of the Hereford-based crack regiment, has designed a course that aims to keep travellers safe in the face of mounting global terrorism.

As well as self-defence and first aid, travellers are taught how to deal with corrupt border patrol guards and survive earthquakes.

"This course is aimed at preparing the nave traveller for anything they may face," said Louise Bowman-Shaw, one of the Objective instructors.

"It has been written by ex-military as well as those who have experienced travelling at the sharper end of life.

"Most problems arise as a result of a number of small, bad decisions.

"One of the main themes of the course is to teach students to switch their heads on, to think of each situation and be aware - they are taught to always be prepared," she said.

One of the first travellers to enrol on the summer survival course is Sophie Griffiths, who works as a personnel assistant at County Hall, Worcester.

The 23-year-old will be packing her bags for the 12-month, round-the-world trip in November, but before she leaves her Tenbury Wells home, she will be stopping off in London for the day-long course.

"My mum was worried about me travelling the world by myself so I'm doing the course to put her mind at rest.

"She was particularly worried about me going to Thailand with all the drugs over there.

"I'm also looking forward to advice about what to take, and not take with me, and how to deal with border patrols - it's all unknown territory to me!"

Sophie's mother, Sandra Griffiths, said she was relieved her daughter was getting professional advice.

"My sister-in-law saw the course advertised in a newspaper so sent Sophie the clipping," said Mrs Griffiths.

"You hear horror stories about people being off on their own in a strange country so it's only natural to worry.

"I think the course is a good idea because it will show her the pitfalls to avoid."

The safety course costs £150 for the day and further details are available from Objective on 01788 899029 or visit the firm's website on www.objectivegapsafety.com
