FACE painting, a bouncy castle and a basketball shoot-out were just some of the things on offer at a Worcester community centre's fun day.

Visitors to the Fairfield Centre, in Fairfield Close, Brickfields, also had a go at crafts, including making a pot on a potters wheel, designing a T-shirt and decorating a biscuit.

There was information about some of the summer courses run at the centre, and anyone who signed up to take part was entered in a prize draw.

COLOURFUL canines had fun in the sun at a charity fund-raising dog show in Malvern.

The aim of the event was to raise money for the Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter at Deblins Green, which has helped abandoned pets and strays for the last 18 years.

In April 2001, the charity officially opened the doors of its purpose built kennel block in Hawthorn Lane and needs to raise funds to keep the facility open.

The ambitious charity has already built a 120ft playpen on the site for dogs to have fun off their leads.

The dog show on Sunday helped raise money for running costs and the next phase of development - to create permanent accommodation for the site manager, a reception and surgery facilities.

Perfect petunias

CHILDREN from all over Worcestershire came together this weekend to see whose petunia was the best.

About a thousand children from 11 different primary schools entered a gardening competition to grow a perfect petunia.

They came together on Saturday for the judging, at Worcester Garden Centre, Droitwich Road, Worcester.

Organiser Nicci Gow was joined by BBC Hereford & Worcester's Mike George for the judging. "There was great anticipation and excitement as the children came in with their plants," she said.

First prize went to Adam Parker, of St Peter's Primary School, who now has the chance to enter the national final of the competition, due to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, next Saturday, where a first prize of £1,000 for his school is up for grabs.
