COMPANIES should remember disability covers a wide range of conditions, not just wheelchair-users, as they prepare for the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Letwork Consortium, in Stourport-on-Severn, was set up three years ago to work with employers to find jobs for people with disabilities.

As the deadline for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 looms in October 2004, it is warning company owners about their obligations.

"Many businesses will be aware of the Act, which is being phased in gradually, but may not be familiar with their duties under the Act," said a spokesman.

"In October 2004 businesses will need to consider making physical changes to their premises to allow people with disabilities to access the services provided.

"Business owners should bear in mind disability covers a wide range of conditions, not just wheelchair-users, who represent fewer than 5 per cent of all disabled people.

"They should also consider hearing and visual impairments, dexterity impairments such as arthritis and "unseen" disabilities such as epilepsy."

Letwork has about 450 employers on a database that is used by its members to find work for their clients with disabilities.

Members include national and local charities, Government agencies and county council departments.

Letwork aims to make employers more aware of the advantages of having an inclusive policy when recruiting new staff, including more loyal and motivated staff, reduced staff turnover, a more diverse workforce better reflecting the customer base and an enhanced corporate reputation for the business.
