CALLOW Hill speedster Colin Willmott put his early season problems behind him to record his best ever finish in the MGTF Series at the weekend.

Twelfth place at Oulton Park in Round Two was the Redditch driver's previous best - and only finish - of an uninspiring campaign but he pulled out the stops to finish second overall and win his class on the Grand Prix circuit at Spa, Belgium.

Willmott, racing in Class A, the MGTF Cup section, started the weekend by qualifying ninth on the grid.

In soaring temperatures, Willmott climbed to seventh by the end of the first lap and fifth a lap later, a position he held for four or five circuits.

But the erratic ace, who spun off at Silverstone and failed to finish at Silverstone or Rockingham, again spun to drop down to 15th.

After recovering and clawing back two places Willmott caught up with leaders after a yellow flag slowed the race and roared up the outside to sixth after being first to spot the green flag for a resumption.

After that sly maneouvre, Willmott picked off the drivers in front of him to finish second behind Barry Benham to grab his first class win.

Willmott returns to action for a double-header at the International meeting at Silverstone a week on Saturday.
