DEAR EDITOR - Like Mr Mayling (May 28th) I attended my polling station at Cofton Hackett Village Hall on May 1st to cast my 'secret' vote in the Bromsgrove District Council Elections.

I too noticed that the number on my Official Poll card was noted by the clerk on the rear of the retained counter foil, which had formed part of the ballot paper handed to me and it became quite obvious to me how this cross referencing could be traced back to the voter concerned. I immediately confronted the Presiding Officer present with my concern and he referred me to the Returning Officer at Bromsgrove.

On my return home, I telephoned the Returning Officer, Mr R F Lewis, who explained the procedure and to my surprise and dismay confirmed that in Local Government Elections "the ballot is not a secret ballot in the true sense."

I had always been assured that low "turn outs" in local elections were due to apathy but, as the result of my experience, I am also that little bit wiser!

Then we have the audacity to send observers to elections conducted overseas! On the other hand, perhaps we do have something to learn?

Not only charity should begin at home.
