The president, Maureen Smith welcomed members to the meeting, giving a special welcome to new member Carol Lawton.
The members stood reverently in memory of Barbara Moore, who died in April. It was good to see Doris Passey back after her illness. Best wishes were sent to Barbara Turner, who is recovering from an eye operation.
The president thanked Catherine for taking a gift of Easter eggs to Sunfield Children's Home. A letter of thanks had been received from the home, as well as an invitation to visit. We were told that Jasper Carrot was organising the raising of money to enable them to build an extension. It was agreed that a social evening and supper would be arranged in the near future. The May and June birthday girls were given good wishes for their birthdays. The County Newsletter was read and discussed. Business concluded, the WI adviser, Marjorie Whiting, was introduced.
Mrs Whiting guided the meeting through the resolutions to be presented at the AGM. The Government is urged to regulate the promotion to children of foods that contribute to an unhealthy diet and to ensure increased opportunities for exercise and practical food education in schools. Care of older people was also called for. The Government is urged to take urgent action in order to ensure that the necessary facilities and services are provided to enable the elderly to spend their remaining years in comfort and dignity.
Another important resolution was to urge the Government to concentrate its efforts in promoting and strengthening modern apprenticeship schemes to provide skilled workers for the future. Mrs Whitfield pointed out the severe shortage of skilled workers at the present time. The voting for the presentation of these resolutions was unanimous. Sylvia Hancox thanked Mrs Whitfield on behalf of the members for her clear and helpful presentation.
Numerous raffle prizez were won. It was an interesting and informative meeting.
