STAFF at a Bromsgrove first school have launched a new initiative in a bid to reduce traffic congestion.
Sidemoor First School has teamed up with Worcestershire County Council to produce a school travel plan which aims to raise awareness of the existing transport problems at the school and the surrounding area.
The plan aims to increase awareness among pupils, staff and parents about the environmental, safety, health and the social consequences of their travel choice.
Some of the measures the Broad Street school will be implementing include a walking bus, a school journey notice board and greater input from school nurses concerning children's health and fitness. They also intend to involve pupils and parents in regular walk to school programmes.
The county council has already provided a humped zebra crossing along Broad Street and narrowed the road to slow traffic outside the school. They have also created a car free entrance.
To mark the initiative, the county council presented the school with a travel plan and certificate, which was designed by pupil Rhianna Edwards.
John Smith, county councillor and assistant cabinet member for sustainability and the environment, (Con-Evesham Hampton) said he was delighted to present the school with its travel plan.
"This is in recognition of their commitment to encourage more pupils to come to school on foot or on their bike and to get into a more healthy lifestyle."
