ALCESTER'S newly revamped community pavilion is now up and running.

Alcestrians were invited into have a look around the pavilion, on Conway Fields, on Saturday and see the new facilities which are now on offer to them at a fun day.

The complete transformation, which has taken more than a year to finish, has changed the pavilion into a state-of-the-art computer suite, drop-in centre and even boasts crche facilities.

The Alcester Opportunities scheme, which is open to everybody in Alcester, also has its own full-time community development worker Shirley Ricketts.

It was one the first schemes to benefit from Advantage Alcester, which pledged £25,000, and all in all cost about £90,000 to complete.

Saturday's fun day included a bouncy castle, face painting, bric-a-brac stalls and a tombola.

One of the first projects to get the new pavilion up and running will be the Connexions run and Alcester youth idea FACE2.

The summer project is purely for teenagers who feel they are excluded from normal social and community activities.

There are just ten places on the project but successful applicants will be offered trips snowboarding, break dancing, climbing, orienteering or even being a DJ.

The trips will have to be fully organised by the youngsters themselves by booking train tickets and gathering information.

And along with the trips, FACE2 offers education on sexual health and drugs workshops.

Even after the summer holidays are over the project is set to continue to make a long-lasting impact on the lives of youngsters in Alcester.

Youth workers and Connexions personal advisors will run the project, give guidance and even accredit the activities so youngsters will have evidence of their achievement.
