WORCESTER City Council's outright rejection of Tesco's planning application seems to me like a futile gesture of defiance.
As I see it, the council has no powers to prevent the sale of the land if this is mutually agreed between the county council and Tesco.
Neither has it any power to prevent the building of the new school on land outside its boundary.
This being the case, St John's will be left with an area of wasteland with derelict buildings, which will be equally objectionable to the residents.
Should the matter go to appeal, this aspect will immediately be apparent to the inspectorate, which has the power to override the city council.
This must be perfectly obvious to our city council whom I would have expected to put the children first had we still been a county borough with responsibility for education.
As it is the delay and uncertainty continues to have a detrimental effect upon the school, its staff and its pupils. What a selfish outlook.
JOHN HINTON,
Worcester.
