JOHN Henry Baylis, of Brook Street, was charged with using indecent language within view or hearing of Prospect Road.
Evidence in support of the charge was given by Superintendent Hayes and four women, who said he made the use of such language people were scared to walk past him.
The defendant denied he ever used such bad language.
After evidence was given, Mr Baylis was found guilty and fined 5s, costs 3s 6d.
Defendant said he hoped the police would now look after the children in the area who threw stones and used bad language.
Superintendent Hayes replied: "You should not be setting them such a very bad example."
