CRICKETERS representing North Bromsgrove High School came within two overs of beating Marylebone Cricket Club.
The school's select XI went down by 18 runs to the touring side from Lord's in their annual match at Barnt Green Cricket Club last Friday.
The fixture was established eight years ago by former North Bromsgrove head boy Giles Toogood, now captain of the MCC.
Batting first, the MCC declared on 220-3 after D Middleton had top scord with 65 and P Coughlin had made 50.
Bromsgrove's Steve Rose, from Arrowvale High School in Redditch, was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-32.
Rose also showed his ability with the bat, hitting 46 for the hosts in reply.
James Spaivin also compiled 31 as North Bromsgrove were skittled out for 203 with two overs to spare. Skipper Toogood took 3-12 for the visitors.
Head of PE at North Bromsgrove, Gwyn Thomas, said: "It's the eighth year the match has taken place and that's the closest we have ever come."
