Dear editor - I am referring to Mr Hugh Wylie's letter of June 18 concerning the conservation of the wetlands.
He is worried at the loss of these habitats through drainage and with them the loss of many marsh plants and birds, such as the lapwing. He states he is prepared to create 50 acres of such wetlands on his own lands, under certain conditions and I think that many people like me would applaud his suggestion. On the eastern side of the A442 between Cutnall Green and Hampton Lovett, and just north of the railway, are two fields of wetlands which have already been called 'The Marshes' and have supported a population of lapwings.
These fields are arable land and have recently been drained again to improve the land as it floods most winters. A natural spring is being drained into a nearby ditch. These fields are the property of Mr Wylie. I would appreciate Mr Wylie explaining this apparent contradiction between his actions and the intentions stated in his letter.
Miss A West,
