THE national launch of a new weapon in the war against rogue bus and lorry operators is being unveiled in Kidderminster today.
The £400,000 system uses number plate recognition equipment to trap illegal vehicles.
A camera sends images of number plates to a computer which can match them with a national database to see if they are covered by an operator licence or test certificate.
The whole exercise takes less than half a second and enables enforcement officers to stop illegal vehicles in their tracks.
The unveiling of the new equipment will coincide with the re-opening of Kidderm -inster's vehicle testing station which has undergone a £1.2 million refurbishment.
The station on the A449 Kidderminster-Worcester road near the Hoo Farm Industrial Estate is operated by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and carries out MoT tests on buses and lorries.
