A MEMORIAL stone to the war dead in Ryall is to receive a makeover.

The inscription on the stone cross, opposite the Bluebell pub on the A38, has faded with time, but this week the parish council decided it was due for a facelift.

The council has received quotes from several stonemasons, with prices in the region of £1,100 plus VAT for the restoration work and a full clean. Several would only undertake the work if they could remove the memorial to their workshop, something the parish council was keen to avoid to keep down the cost.

However, at its meeting on Monday (July 7), the council suggested the price could be lowered by inviting students from University College Worcester to undertake the work as part of their vocational training. A similar arrangement was undertaken in Severn Stoke some years ago. It was agreed that the parish clerk, Mary Barnett, would contact UCW to find out more.

The cross was placed by the Royal British Legion, whose members place wreaths there each Armistice Day.
