SCHOOL governors have asked police to take action against car drivers whose parking is threatening children's safety.

Parents at the Wyche Primary School have been sent a letter warning them about the situation.

In the past year, children have been involved in two near misses and the school's governors have asked police to monitor the situation.

Chairman Dave Palmer said there could be a problem if emergency vehicles needed access and added that cars should not park close to junctions.

"Our concerns are that there are areas where parking is not appropriate and there is a potential danger to children," he said.

"There have been a couple occasions when adults have moved children away from cars but how close they were is debatable.

"Whenever you've a large number of cars around you can have obstructed views of pedestrians walking around the area."

He added that the police had given them advice and that the situation was being monitored.

Headteacher Geoff Rutherford said: "Although schools are primarily centres of learning and education we obviously have a duty of care for the health and safety of the children in the school.

"The governing body's request for police assistance is a measure of the seriousness with which they view this issue."

Malvern Hills district councillor for Malvern Wells, John Tretheway said: "I've had complaints from the odd local person about the way parents visiting the school park in an anti-social way. But I've got to point out that it's a problem you get at all schools."
