PLANS for a new £1.25 million junction on the M50 have been thrown out by Worcestershire County Council.

The new junction, near Pendock, was intended to improve road access should flooding cuts off Upton, but sparked protests and petitions from nearby residents.

The authority's ruling cabinet voted unanimously to scrap the proposals yesterday (Thursday).

It also decided to bid for around £600,000 from the Government to carry out improvements to three roundabouts on the south Worcester ring road (A4440).

If successful, roundabouts at Powick, Whittington and in between will be changed to improve traffic flow and road safety.

Further feasibility work is also to take place on proposals to raise the A4104 at Upton-upon-Severn in times of flood.

Cabinet member Coun Tom Wells, who campaigned against the M50 plans, welcomed the outcome of the meeting.

"It's very good news for many villages in South Worcestershire, and saves an awful lot of unnecessary expense," he said. "I feel that their voices have been heard, and I'm delighted that the council has abandoned its scheme."

He also lent his support to the A4440 improvements, pointing out that one of the roundabouts, near Powick, is currently the worst accident blackspot in Worcestershire. The outcome of the bid will be announced in December.
