D E MARGRETT (That blinking green man, Saturday, July 5) says "when the green man is still on the blink, pedestrians still have the right to commence to cross the road. I was assured of this by a police officer".
It would appear Mr Margrett and the police officer need to consult an excellent publication known - only to motorists, it seems - as the Highway Code.
It has what seems to be a little-known section for pedestrians, which, if followed by them, would overnight almost entirely eliminate pedestrian casualties, and probably reduce motorist ones too.
Among other pointers to the law concerning road use and tips on staying alive, they'll find: "When the green figure begins to flash you should not start to cross."
