A BELLY-dancing librarian will bring her workplace to life when she jangles and gyrates for a children's summer activity.

Liz Whitehouse will demonstrate the exotic dance and give a talk on its history and background.

The one-off activity is part of a number of events for children at St John's Library in Worcester, including bingo and a pirate workshop.

The 54-year-old began belly dancing for a hobby at Perdiswell Young People's Centre after friends suggested it.

"People are quite amused when they find out because I am a librarian," she said.

"It's a good conversation piece because people think librarians are staid."

Mrs Whitehouse, who is a member of The Norbury Theatre, Droitwich, said she belly danced because it was good exercise.

"It's predominately ladies in the class but you do get the occasional man on board," said the mother-of-two.

She will wear a coin belt and casual clothes when she belly dances on the day to music from Egypt, Turkey and India.

"I'm not an expert and this is my first time doing it in public," said Mrs Whitehouse, of Albany Road, Rainbow Hill, Worcester.

"The activity is to encourage children to come to the library and to see what is on offer. For instance, we do videos, CDs and internet access here.

"We'll hopefully get the children involved in the dancing."

The free demonstration takes place at the library on Thursday, July 31, between 2.15pm and 3pm.
