WYTHALL held its annual open mixed tournament, sponsored by Coors Brewery, with pairs from Stratford, Studley and Beachcroft together with four pairs from the home club.
Wythall pair, Joe Singleton and Lynn Woolley made their debut in this type of tournament.
In group one Gary Jackson and Debbie Salem were first with Paul Challens and Jackie Allmark second, both from Studley.
Group two saw two pairs have equal points; Kevin Turner and Julie Gifford from Wythall, and Dave and Margaret Parsons from Beachcroft, both with 28 points. Since the Parsons defeated the home pair they finished first in the group.
The final between the Parsons and Studley pair Jackson and Salem started close and all held serve. A great gane, lasting more than 15 minutes, followed.
A missed forehand from Dave Parsons eventually forced the break so he and Margaret were 1-3 down.
But Salem and Jackson eventually took the title 6-4.
Alan Griffin, general manager of Wythall Community Centre, made the presentation. Griffin was responsible for securing the sponsorship, again promised for 2004, a real boost for tennis in the area.
