JOURNEYS to three town schools will have big money spent on them after a survey among pupils and parents highlighted problem areas.

Through Worcestershire County Council's Safer Routes to Schools initiative, travel chiefs plan to spend £200,000 on getting more children strolling or pedalling to classes.

The move aims to ease traffic congestion around schools, at a time when more people are opting to drive rather than walk.

Chawson First School, in Wych Road, Witton Middle School, on Old Coach Road and Droitwich Spa High School, Briar Mill, will all reap benefits.

An off-road pedestrian and cycle path will link all three establishments and include a controlled pedestrian crossing in Celvestune Way. It will begin in Old Coach Road and finish up at Little Hill.

A county spokeswoman said: "A preliminary and outline design scheme has been produced and is now being distributed to secure public and pupil comment before the scheme is prepared in detail.

"This will be achieved by displaying plans and circulating letters, blueprints and questionnaires to all residents within vicinity of the proposals."

Last week, the Droitwich Spa Advertiser highlighted traffic troubles in Ombersley Way and St Joseph's Close, caused by parents on the school run.

Town councillor John Cook (Lab-West) called for action and suggested a car park be created off Ombersley Way. This week he welcomed the council's desire to get more people on foot or bike.

"Not only will it take cars off the road - it's also a healthier option that should be encouraged if safety measures are in place," the councillor added.
