WITH girls football one of the biggest growing sports in the country, a Newtown club is considering setting up its own team.
Newtown Sports Junior Football Club already run successful boys teams but will set up a Under-10/12 girls outfit - to play in the Mercian Festival Girls League - if there is demand.
The club, in partnership with Malvern Hills District Council and Worcestershire Football Associa-tion, will test the water by offering free coaching sessions.
Newtown chairman Martyn Twinberrow said: "Newtown Sports are fully aware that a majority of primary school aged girls in Malvern have been overlooked when it comes to football.
"These sessions are aimed mainly for girls between the ages of 5-11, where the main objective is to introduce the girls to some structured coaching and to encourage those of all abilities to come and have fun."
The sessions will take place on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm, starting on July 24 at the Chase Technology College, Geraldine Road, Malvern.
They will run for six weeks on the school's all-weather playing surface where Newtown Sports will provide qualified coaches, where the emphasis will be on having fun and learning new skills.
The club says that whether they want to turn up to just one session or all six is optional but ask that players bring along appropriate kit.
Newtown, whose coaches hold FA coaching badges, became the first football club in Malvern to attain the Football Association's Charter Standard award and has recently applied for Charter Standard Development status which recognises achievement in grass roots sport. The club also implements a FA- approved child protection policy.

The club is holding a registration/fun day on Sunday, July 20, at Newtown Road (noon-4pm) for their under nine to under 15 boys teams. Girls will also be registered for the community coaching centre course which takes place on Saturday, September 6 (9-10.15am) at Dukes Meadow, Barnards Green.
