NOT long ago I wrote to you to protest about a proposed threat to the traffic island in Barnards Green and those plans were subsequently withdrawn.
Since then we have had a zebra crossing installed which, while not exactly a tourist feature, is at least interesting as a maze and is certainly a benefit to local residents, especially the elderly and the pupils of the many local schools.
Since its installation the flower beds have been sponsored by Hunt's and QinetiQ and I would congratulate them and everyone else involved on the marvellous job they have done.
In a time of more depressing trade news with two more Malvern shops closing (Malvern Outdoors and Cloud Nine), what has been done with this area shows that local people have the imagination and determination to make the town better for all of us.
If only the shop and business rents were reduced to a sensible level we could have the shopping centre we all want and need but as these are mainly controlled by national property companies, who have probably never even visited the town, it seems like an impossible dream.
How long has the off-licence in Church Street been closed? This is one of the prime sites in Malvern.
When will these property companies realise that a lower rent is better than no rent at all?
The island in Barnards Green proves that we can improve the town - just give us the chance!
