RECORDS tumbled at The Worcestershire last Sunday as the club's best golfers competed in the Club Championship Competition played over 36 holes.
Peter Lupino, who had one the competition on six previous occasions, was in his usual good form in the morning round returning a one over par score of 72.
But Peter was pushed all the way by a rising star, 16-year-old Matt Pugh, who has a handicap of 4. Matt, who previously played his golf at Droitwich, also returned a gross score of 72 so honours were even after the morning round.
The extreme heat of the afternoon did not diminish the excellent golf. Pugh returned another gross score of 72 in his afternoon round.
But Peter was not going to give up his crown easily to the 16 year old and, playing his consistent, high-quality golf, Peter also returned a score of 72 to tie for
first place. Phil Dance was third with a 36-hole total of 147.
Members eagerly chased through the record books as the score of 144 was reported as the lowest total ever achieved in the 36-hole competition. With the pair tied, a five-hole play off was necessary.
In the play off, Lupino gained a two-stroke advantage at the first hole. But his advantage was lost at the second hole when he took three strokes to escape from the difficult bunker. At the third hole, a short par three, Peter obtained a par to Matt's bogey four, so honours were again even.
With Peter scoring pars at the long fourth hole and the short fifth to Matt's bogeys at each hole, Peter became the club champion for the seventh time.
No other player in the history of the club, has won its championship on seven separate occasions.
In the Deerhurst Cup, played on the same day for Division Two golfers over 18 holes, four players returned scores of 70 with Isaac Nyamekye being placed fourth and Jerry Hibbert placed third. Two players returned the excellent scores of 67 and could only be separated on the count back system. Tony Pullen was placed second and senior golfer John Green won the Deerhurst with his score of 67.
In the Ladies' Combined Stableford, everyone was pleased to see the Lady Captain, Kate Foster, return to good form after her severe Achilles tendon injury. Kate scored 36 points to obtain fifth position. Joan Haworth was fourth, Cynthia Guest third and the ever-improving Lynda Mackie, second. Jane Quick won with 40 points.
In the Combined Novices Cup, Fran Jackson-Dooley was the winner with a score of 44 points.
