PENSIONERS could be given further concessionary fares for public transport in proposals being considered by Malvern Hills District Council.

The issue of concessionary fares and pricing is just one of several that have been brought to the attention of the district council by the public.

At present people aged 60 and are eligible for half-priced bus fares but the council is considering increasing the concession.

One suggestion is to charge a third of the price.

Concessionary fares for young people and prices of entry to council facilities such as leisure centres are also expected to be examined.

A report has been published by the council detailing this and other issues raised to authority members by the public during canvassing for the local elections in May.

Workshop

A workshop was held last month for councillors to put together ideas and identify further issues for review.

The current provision of youth facilities, health provision and policing are among other top district issues that will be examined.

The report had been published in advance of a meeting of the district council's overview and scrutiny committee, as part of its works programme for 2003/04.

"The overall purpose is to be constantly questioning, challenging and reviewing everything we do and whether we can do it better," said Stephen Leese, assistant chief executive of the district council.

"It's not just what councillors thought were important issues but what the council has been told is important by people in the district generally."

The matter will now be discussed at a meeting of the district council's overview and scrutiny committee tomorrow.
