WORCESTER has produced so many talented musicians that it would be difficult to single out any one for particular mention.
However, I applaud Mike Grundy on his choice of John Merrick in his recent Memory Lane.
As boys, we sang together in Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir. I remember John's early efforts on piano and never hear Strauss's MorgenBlatte without thinking of him.
It was no small achievement to play in Stew's Dancing Academy. His strict tempo found favour among the most fastidious ballroom dancers.
John went on to give pleasure to thousands and brought solace to more than a few.
The life of a musician is never easy. For every performance, there are hours of preparation and practice. Life isn't all glamour and applause.
Most musicians have moments of disappointment and have to endure a few brickbats. John has survived all this and still come up smiling. I'm pleased he's still going strong and hope he'll long continue to do so.
