Millions of pounds worth of improvements are poised to begin at two leisure centres in Worcester.

Worcester Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, in Sansome Walk, and Perdiswell Leisure Centre, in Bilford Road, will have £3m of work carried out in order to offer the public a better service.

The investment comes as a result of the city council signing a 10-and-a-half-year management contract with sports providers, Leisure Connection.

Wynne Rogers, the city council's assistant head of cultural services, said there is a big public demand for health and fitness in Worcester and the council has to respond to that.

"At Worcester Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre they are carrying out major work on the changing rooms, reception area and to the health and fitness suite.

"At Perdiswell, there will be work on the fitness suite and they are converting the squash courts into a dance studio and they are also building a crche.

"The facilities have been in need of modernising for some time to fulfil the increased customer expectancy," said Mr Rogers.

Around £241,000 has been earmarked for improving access for disabled users at both centres.

Work at both Perdiswell Leisure Centre and Worcester Swimming Pool is due to be completed by October and November, respectively. In the meantime, the council has promised disruption to the public will be minimised as much as possible.
