TWELVE more places could be provided at a Worcester day nursery if an extension plan goes ahead.

But the scheme is likely to be turned down by city planners because of a shortage of parking space on the Bilford Road site.

The Wishing Well nursery currently has permission to care for up to 15 children.

Headteacher Jenny Jenkins said there was a need for more child care places in the city and the proposed extension would help meet the demand.

She said the nursery was open from 8am to 6pm, which helped to stagger children's arrival and departure times, reducing the amount of traffic arriving at nearby Perdiswell Primary School at 9am and 3pm.

"A lot of our nursery children have siblings at school, which is why the nursery is so popular," she said.

"Some parents leave their children with us at 8am and we deliver them to school on foot. The bulk of our nursery children go home at 3pm, but we also run an after-school club.

Arrangement

"We collect around 15 children from school and their parents arrive between 4.30 and 6pm."

Mrs Jenkins said the nursery had an arrangement with the school that staff could park there, in order to free up parking space on the nursery site.

In a report to the city planning committee, which meets tomorrow, chief officer Peter Yates says the extension would result in a shortfall of six on-site parking places.

Because of this, he believes cars would be parked on the road, close to a junction, endangering other road users.
