AN elderly man was attacked and robbed in Meadowhill Road as he walked home in what police have described as a "despicable" act.

The 79-year-old man was walking along the Riverside street at about 11.15pm on Tuesday, July 15, after going out with friends when he noticed a car drive past him.

He was approached by a man who asked him for directions and then punched him in the face.

There was a scuffle between the man and the attacker and the man's wallet and mobile phone were stolen.

The victim was taken to the Alexandra Hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises and then discharged.

The attacker was white, about 5ft 7-5ft 9ins tall and of medium to stocky build.

He had short dark, tidily cut hair, a fat face and was clean shaven. He was wearing a dark coloured bomber jacket.

DC Gerry Smith said: "This was a despicable act on an elderly man who tried to protect himself.

"Although it was quite late at night, there may have been people around who could have been returning home after a night out themselves and I would ask that they call us on 08457 444888 if they have information .

"It may also be that the offender will brag about this attack to his friends.

"If this happens, I urge them to call us or to ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
