A man who drove a car over his girlfriend's brother after violence in a Bromsgrove pub has escaped a jail sentence.

Stephen Bickford was glassed by Derek Tidmarsh in the Golden Lion in Austin Road, Charford, and was followed outside, said prosecutor Jabeen Akhtar.

She said Tidmarsh then ran at Bickford's car as he was attempting to escape from the scene on November 9 last year.

But he rolled onto the bonnet, fell to the ground and the car ran over his right leg, causing a compound fracture of the shinbone.

Bickford, aged 26, of Beaudesert Park, Henley in Arden, pleaded guilty to wounding.

Judge David McEvoy QC said it would not be in the public interest to jail the defendant who was attacked first.

He ordered Bickford to pay Tidmarsh £1,000 compensation for his injuries. Bickford was also given a two-year community rehabilitation order and told to carry out 100 hours community work.

Tidmarsh was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm for the glass attack. He was given a two-year community rehabilitation order by magistrates at an earlier hearing.

Lawrence Watts, defending, said if Tidmarsh had stayed in the pub after the initial problem he would not have got injured.

"But he ran after a man he had just glassed in the face," he added. Bickford bitterly regretted the injury but had been under intense provocation.
