SOMMERVILLE JAZZ BAND CONCERT: On Saturday, July 12 the band performed a concert at the Broadway United Reformed Church.
The band consists six members and were supported by a female vocalist and a compere. The band was given an enthusiastic reception after playing over two hours (including after refreshments catered by church members). Pieces included Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and other greats. It is hoped that the orchestra will return in the future, when a greater number of fans will support the event.
LUGGERS HALL GARDEN OPEN DAY: For some years Mr and Mrs Haslam has opened their garden for the benefit of the National Garden Scheme. On Sunday, July 13, with perfect hot weather, at least 120 people savoured the plants and flowers. Some also viewed the fish in the pond, while they enjoyed their cake and tea.
A few years ago the garden was reviewed in this newspaper and since then many readers have been visitors. With little help Mr and Mrs Haslam have maintained the beauty and the tranquillity of the garden.
GARDEN CLUB: At the June meeting the speaker was Jenny Worsfold, I'll be the Judge of That. She is a well known judge at garden shows and exhibitions. She is also an exhibitor and demonstrator. She picked a few members of the audience and invited them to sample some produce which was brought to the meeting. She commented how the judges would mark each sample. The audience had a useful lesson for handling produce and plants.
The competition Foliage Pot Plants, was won by Christine Savage, second was Margaret Wright and Susan Morris was placed third. Shirley Gobourn was highly commended.
The next meeting is on Monday, July 28 at the usual time and venue the speaker will be Brenda Jones on Scented Plants. The competition Your Favourite Garden Flower (one stem).
The following additional events have been arranged: Wednesday, August 6, garden party at Church Street, Broadway for 6pm to 8pm by kind permission of Penny Valender, admission is £1; Sunday, August 10, garden scheme to Colgrave Plants, 10am to 5pm, admission £3; September 13, Broadway Flower Show on Village Green.
