PLAYING FIELD: Roger Beard, chairman of the playing field sub-committee, would like to make known the present position about the developments being carried out there. Climbing equipment has been ordered for the age group 6-12 and this, which will comply with European standards on safety, will duly be fenced for security once in place. Cricket facilities will be installed over the next two weeks, meanwhile, the committee awaits the result of an application for a grant to help with the creation of a basketball pitch. For the area which is identified by the planners as the leisure area, a company in Shrewsbury is looking at designs for tables and seating; the tree planting is scheduled for late autumn. Sadly, the committee is constantly faced with negative aspects of their planning and progress. The site continues to need a weekly clearing of glass and litter and this is done by Mrs Beard who conscientiously carries out this unenviable service knowing only too well that rubbish and offending articles of all kinds will quickly reappear.

SCHOOL LEAVERS SERVICE: Took place last Sunday morning and proved to be a moving and memorable event. The new school hall was full. Most of the school leavers were present to entertain with music and verse and reminiscences many proud parents and grandparents, governors, volunteer helpers and supporters, and, not least, many of the morning congregation from St James' church. The church organist, Lilian Rain, whose 90th birthday was reported some months ago, officiated at the piano and the service was led by the Rev Richard Thorniley. It was a delightful occasion and gave evident pleasure to the headmistress and her staff.
