I READ the letters regarding speed limits from K Rees and J Tanner (Shuttle /Times and News, July 17) with interest.

Do they realise just how difficult it is to keep a high power, modern car below the 30mph limit.

The zero tolerance 30mph mentality doesn't take into consideration any factors that affect the average driver.

A steep hill will have the driver constantly pressing the brake to keep to the limit as engine braking often will not be enough, just as a gentle hill will slowly add to your speed sometimes without the driver realising.

I would ask:

1 Are we supposed to watch our speedometers or the road ahead?

2 Should children have more road sense and be responsible for their actions if they dash into the road into the path of a driver, as generally the driver is branded a murderer even if he/she could do nothing to avoid the accident?

3 Should our police be wasting their time and tax-payer's money hiding in hedges when we have a terrible crime problem on certain estates that are making peoples lives a living hell?

4 Most people being caught for a minor speeding offence (two or three miles per hour over the limit) are decent, hardworking tax-paying people, who have never had any problems before. Is this acceptable?

I would be interested in hearing the answers to these questions.
