PUPILS, staff and parents celebrated a successful year at Prince Henry's High School speech day.

Over the past year the school has been heaped with praise by Ofsted inspectors, achieved a 99 per cent A Level pass rate and settled into its status as a language college.

The school is also bidding farewell to several members of staff, including five teachers who between them have given 118 years of service to the school.

Head teacher Bernard Roberts said: "It has been an exceptional year, with a huge commitment from all the pupils in all areas of school life." The five long-serving teachers leaving the school this year are Carol Jones, sixth form deputy head, Keith Cowley, head of Geography, Maureen Shears, head of English, Dusty Rhodes, school bursar and maths teacher and deputy head Ross Garratt.

Mr Roberts said: "These highly professional colleagues will be greatly missed and I would like to wish them all well for the future."

The school's success has come despite a scarcity of funding experienced in all county schools. Mr Roberts said that there would have to be some change soon. "We are worse off than we expected to be as a result of this and have made do this year by cutting back on things we would like to have done. "The things we did not do this year will have to be done."
