Following on the recent fuss over names for Millside, I wonder if there's space somewhere to commemorate Evesham's historians?
To be fair, some credit has already been given. E.J. Rudge's short history of the town came out in 1820, and we have a "Rudge Road". Edmund and Herbert New published various booklets and pamphlets on the town, and there's a "New Road" in Hampton. E.A.B. Barnard, who edited 'Notes & Queries' in the Journal for some fifty year, is commemorated in "Barnard's Close" in the Fairfield.
However, there are some glaring exceptions. Tindal wrote the first substantial history of Evesham (published 1792). How about a "Tindal Road"?
Between 1902 and 1949 William Smith (and later his son Kenneth Gill Smith) wrote and published a series of guides to the town as well as editing the Journal (and much else). Any chance of a "Smith Street"? George May (buried in the Unitarian Chapel graveyard) is perhaps our most famous local historian. His history of 1845 (revising his earlier history of 1834) is perhaps the definitive work on the town, albeit being now some 150 years out of date. How about a "George May Road"?
There are new developments behind Safeways: have the roads been named yet? Any chance of some space for the historians? Any spare space around Millside? There seems so much potential here, though perhaps, upon consideration, we should avoid "George May Rise".
