Like many people, Mr Smith-Maxwell (Your Letters, July 18) has seen through the Prime Minister who has been so full of promises to improve public services and so empty on delivery. He has also failed to stand up for our national interests in Europe.
Mr Smith-Maxwell finds some relief that at least our own Bank of England still sets our own interest rates. This is one reason our economy is sounder than continental Europe, which is struggling under a one-size-fits-all interest rate that doesn't really fit anybody.
If we want to continue to set our own interest rates, we have to keep our own currency. We should stay out of the Euro.
Philip Bushill-Matthews, MEP, European Parliament, Brussels.
