DAVID Andrews' anti-British diatribe (You Say, Tuesday, July 15) in which he extolled us to support "our" European sportsmen and women, really does illustrate the total lack of understanding held by most Europhiles about the feelings of the majority of British people.

He said "Germany did us proud in reaching the World Cup Final".

Who exactly is he referring to by "us"?

Germans support Germany, the French support France, and the English support England.

That, quite simply, is the way it has always been and the way it always will be.

If he seriously thinks otherwise, then he's truly deluded in the extreme.

Where does he think this European Federalism will lead in terms of sport?

An EU football team representing Europe in the World Cup? The Six Nations Rugby championship being replaced by the One Nation Championship?

I have nothing against Europe or Europeans. I've visited most European countries and I've worked in about eight of them.

I like Europe. I am, however, British and I'm staying British, and nobody will ever, under any circumstances, force me against my will to be European by nationality.

Whether Mr. Andrew's likes it or not, the vast majority of people across the countries of Europe feel the same way about their nationality, too.

As for Mr. Andrew's comment that he was "delighted Turkey won the Eurovision song contest", you really should consider getting out more often, Mr Andrews.

You might find something more interesting to delight in.
