I WAS disappointed to read Richard Babington on Advanced Driving (Evening News, July 12).

He conceded himself he has little enthusiasm for driving and perhaps was not the best person to report on what might be interesting, challenging and invigorating about learning to pass the Advanced Driving test.

It was no bonus either that he chose to report in a jokey fashion which did not manage to crack my face once.

Perhaps it is similar to being disinterested in sport or art for the rewards from ultimately improving performance within a tight framework of discipline to happen for some.

And improving competence within any framework of discipline can sharpen one's mental faculties generally. Sadly, he lists first the benefits available to advanced drivers as lower car insurance.

The primary benefit is more likely to be the thrill of improving competence at the hands of someone immeasurably more competent than oneself and knowing that when unavoidable, one is taking risks more safely.

WENDY HANDS,

Upton-upon-Severn.
