HISTORY was very much in the making for Worcester Nomads last Saturday as under-14 player Nathan Newport made an unbeaten 110 on his senior debut against Alvechurch.
And the following day saw the first Nomads senior game to include a women in their side when Lucy Marsh made her debut in the Sunday 2nd XI.
Newport's innings was very much the highlight of the 2nd Crusader Worcestershire County League Division Two encounter.
Batting at four in the order, he showed a full range of strokes in both attack and defence.
Particularly impressive driving through the cover, he rarely showed any nerves or uncertainty in what was largely a chanceless innnings.
Support came from Dave Finbow and Dave Pearson (31). Steve Wilks came in for the final few overs and helped Newport to his century as the Nomads reached 232-5.
Nomads, however, were unable to capitalise on a small ground and left Alvechurch in the hunt.
Miles Illingworth (3-60), supported by Dominic Harris, bowled well to help the game to a close finish.
Alvechurch vice-captain, Pritchard (78 not out) and young wicket-keeper Weaver had other ideas, however, and steered their team to victory with three wickets, and five balls to spare.
Meanwhile, Marsh took the field for Nomads' senior side on Sunday to complete the history making against Studley side Entaco.
Marsh, who plays for Worcestershire Ladies, gave the selectors much to think about with an excellent performance in the field and an unbeaten eight at the end of the Nomads' allotted 40 overs.
Entaco had been invited to bat first and posted a total of 183-7.
The visitors bowled without a great deal of luck with the home side showing some aggressive leg-side hitting throughout.
Nomads got off to a steady start in reply, before picking up the tempo. The failing this season, however, has been in maintaining the run chase through the middle and latter overs as scored just 44 in the last 18 overs to give Entaco a comfortable victory.
