A "FLYING dentist" whose business is reaching new heights will soon be dropping in to Worcester.
After 15 years working as a conventional dentist, Dr John Davies turned his back on normal teeth seven years ago to concentrate on dentures.
He set up a practice called "The Flying Dentist" in Gloucester, and discovered there was a considerable gap in the market.
Dr Davies offers a completely mobile service, visiting patients in their own homes to check on their dentures.
The practice already covers Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury, and the travelling tooth expert is now bringing his expertise to the Faithful City.
Many of his patients are unable to get out to a dentist for health reasons, and Dr Davies also sees residents of nursing homes and residential homes.
Indentified
The 44-year-old dentist provides full dentures and sees people with existing dentures, giving advice or making repairs to avoid the need to replace them.
"I identified a need in this age group, because a lot of denture wearers are elderly," said Dr Davies.
"A lot of them are residents of nursing and residential homes, so I set up the practice because of that.
"I'm able to go into nursing homes and see housebound patients."
Not all patients are unable to go out, however. Many people simply prefer to be seen in their own homes, either because they find it more convenient or because they do not like going to a conventional dental practice.
Dr Davies has seen 5,500 patients since setting up the practice, and believes he is the only dentist of his type in the area.
"People are genuinely surprised to find there's a practice doing this," he said. "Even after seven years, there are some people who are unaware that we exist."
