FREE public transport could be on the cards for pensioners in South Worcestershire - if neighbouring councils can agree on it.
A Smart Card scheme would replace concessionary travel in Worcester City centre, Malvern and Wychavon within 12 months.
It would mean all three areas running the same system, which does not happen at present.
Councillor Andrew Christian-Brookes, who is heading Wychavon's part of the campaign, has hinted that the system might be free.
"It's early days to say exactly when the Smart Card will come in and how much it will cost," he said.
"But, with several of my colleagues, I recently did a tour of Droitwich, Pershore and Evesham to find out how pensioners feel about public transport and the systems currently in place.
"The overwhelming impression we had was that older people would like to see free travel, particularly on buses.
"This would be difficult to do on our own but, with Malvern Hills District Council and Worcester City Council on board as well, it could be possible.
"At first, the Smart Card, and any benefits that come with it, would only be for buses. But we hope to extend this to taxis."
The Smart Card will hold the user's details, a photograph, and information on where it can be used.
All First buses have been fitted with readers for the device ready for its launch next year.
It would be good news for members of the Worcestershire Partnership of Older People's Forums.
Eight forums have been fighting for years to win free travel for pensioners.
Eve Freer, chairman of the Droitwich Spa Area Forum, was pleased to hear the news, but was adamant that more still needed to be done.
"I'll only get excited if this actually happens," she said. "At the moment it is just talks.
"Anything that improves transport or the cost of it is welcome.
"But, even then, it won't be enough. We're fighting for free transport in the whole of the county, not just the south. Older people deserve it."
